Cheetahs lose Small-Smith

The Toyota Cheetahs received a hefty blow to their Pro14 hopes on Wednesday with the news that utility back William Small-Smith will miss up to three months of rugby because of a knee injury.

Small-Smith received the knock in the 27-21 loss against Treviso on Saturday and underwent a scan in Bloemfontein on Tuesday, confirming a medial ligament injury that will keep him on the sidelines.

Along with captain Francois Venter who will miss “a few weeks”, according to coach Rory Dunca,n because of a blow to the neck area, the Cheetahs will need to find a new midfield this week.

“It looks like it is his medial ligament so he will be out for a couple of months – I think its three - and then he will be back to play,” coach Rory Duncan told supersport.com

Nico Lee is set to continue his role there, with a possible surprise of Niel Marais replacing Venter in the midfield being touted in the Bloemfontein media.

Clinton Swart may not have recovered from his injury in time, and at best is a possible bench candidate while Ali Mgijima is also a candidate for a midfield role.

Henco Venter has recovered from his concussion and is available, with Torsten van Jaarsveld set to lead the side into battle.

In other news Makazole Mapimpi confirmed to the Volksblad that he will only have two more games for the franchise before joining the Cell C Sharks for the upcoming Vodacom Super Rugby season.
